Chapter 12

Sunny's little house was quiet as she got ready to end the long day. She lowered herself into her grandmother's old wooden rocker that sat in the corner of the room, right next to the weaving loom. Ben sat here while he watched her teach the girls to weave. She ran her hands over the solid arms of the chair, feeling the texture of the wood, smoothed by years of loving hands. Her grandmother's, hers, and today, Ben's. What had he thought?

Her pulse quickened at the memory of his tall frame in this chair, boots firmly on the floor, rocking gently as he'd taken in the process of weaving. He'd watched, asked questions, even handing them balls of yarn from the woven basket that sat by his feet when they asked. Interested. Not condescending. Not bored. Ben seemed so comfortable here.

It seemed too quiet now. The girls' happy chatter had filled the air, Ben's low voice joining with his questions and comments through dinner and the lesson. Then the girls left, and it seemed like it changed. He had been so quiet when he had driven her to her car in town. Just about as silent as a stone.

Sunny closed her eyes for a minute, pushing emotions away. His feelings were his business, not hers. If the glimpse into her life had driven him to silence, so be it. She'd get over it. The best thing was to have no expectations of people, to just be strong in yourself.

People couldn't shut you out if you didn't let them in first. She knew that, but she slipped, and somehow the handsome man from Philadelphia had gotten under her skin. And into her heart. He was a stranger to her world, a visitor like a tumble weed who's blown in on a hot desert wind. The wind would gust again, and he'd be gone. She must remember that.

Sunny stood up from her beloved chair, gazing around her home. She loved this place. She loved her life. And she was glad he had come here to see her world, even if he left a giant emptiness when he left.

Ben felt groggy when he climbed out of bed the next morning. He'd awakened in the night with one nightmare, but instead of dreaming of war time tragedies, the main character in his dream was his angry father and his scathing words. He righted his thinking in the shower, letting the hot water pour down on his head and back, washing away his reaction, and reaffirming his resolve to stand up to the man.

By the time he downed his first cup of coffee and devoured half a plate of Emma's scrambled eggs and bacon in the downstairs dining room, he was fit and ready for the day. Big brother was ready to do battle for his little sister's rights to live her life as she chose. Case closed.

Feeling a bit like a knight getting ready to fight a dragon, he pulled out his phone to call his sister Lucy.
